Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included to the price?

Included in the price: Fully comprehensive insurance for the first driver (subject to restrictions – see “Are there any insurance restrictions?”),
AA 5 star Breakdown cover, a bottle of camping gas, pans, kettle, crockery, cutlery, pop-up tent, mains hook up cable and free secure parking.

Extras Available: Drive away awning (with two man inner tent) £30; COBB BBQ/Oven (with bricketts) £15; a tow bar mounted bike rack for two bikes £20;

When do bookings start and finish?

Week and weekend bookings run from 3pm on a Friday and midweek bookings run from 3pm on a Monday. All vans are due back at 10am on the day of return so we can get them ready for their next outing.

We reserve the right to charge a late return fee of £25 per hour and pick-up must be before 6pm.

Where do we pick up the van?

The Groovy Campers depot is just two miles inland from the village of Blakeney on the North Norfolk coast. The collection address, necessary documentation you need to bring with you and how to find us is included in your confirmation email – please read this carefully!

Hirers need to call us when they are 30 minutes away so we can arrange to meet at the “Groovy Depo” to do the handover.

How do I make a booking?

Once we’ve agreed dates and a van we’ll provisionally reserve it while we sort out a deposit of £150. This is payable by bank transfer, cheque or credit card as all payments must be traceable at the request of our insurance company.

The balance is due six weeks before your trip. At the start of the booking we also take a security deposit of £500. This will be returned at the end of your booking following an inspection of the van. Deductions for damage outside normal wear and tear, fuel, or any additional cleaning will be taken from the security deposit.

Are there any insurance restrictions?

Drivers must be 25 and over and must have held a valid British licence for three or more years.
Additional drivers can be added at cost of £5.00 per date (subject to the restrictions above).

As with other vehicle hire, drivers need to provide proof of ID, driving license (both parts) and current address.

Is fuel included?

The vans are hired with a full tank of unleaded fuel and should be returned with a full tank of fuel.
There are a number of petrol stations close by, including one in Blakeney.

If the van is returned without a full tank of fuel we reserve the right to charge £25 plus the cost of fuel. This will be deducted from the security deposit and a receipt will be provided.

Where can we go in the vans?

We include a mileage allowance of 150 miles per day in the cost and expect the vans will mainly be used in Norfolk and Suffolk. Should you want to go further afield and think you might go over the mileage limits then talk to us and we’ll see what we can be arranged but with a top speed of about 50mph it’s best to plan a leisurely trip!

Should extra mileage not be arranged before the hire then it will be charged at £5.00 per 10 miles and will be deducted from the security deposit.

What do I need to bring?

You’ll need to bring your clothes (small soft bags work better than rigid suitcases) and food for you holiday. You’ll also need to bring bedding, pillows and towels. The rock and roll bed is 150cm (5ft) wide, so you can either use sleeping bags or a double duvet with a base sheet. For the beds in the pop tops we’d recommend sleeping bags. The campervans have internal lights but we’d also advise bringing a torch or lantern.

What happens if the van breaks down?

We keep the vans maintained to the highest standard but in the unlikely event of a breakdown AA 5 star cover is included in the rental price. The AA will do everything they can to get you going again but if they are unable to repair the van they will bring you back to Groovy Camper’s base. If possible (subject to availability) we will try to supply a replacement vehicle, or failing that we’ll refund the remainder of your hire period.

Are the vans easy to drive?

Driving a 40 year old classic VW campervan is a bit different to a regular car and, of course, performance and braking are not the same as a modern vehicle. But, because you are higher up the view is great, the gears are easy to use and once you get used to the length they are easy to manoeuvre. All our vans drive well and after ten minutes at the wheel you’ll be ready to enjoy the experience!

Can we take the campervan abroad?

No – regretfully our vans can not be taken abroad.

Can we bring our bikes?

We have bike racks available at a charge of £20 per booking – let us know if you’d like one when you book and we’ll fit it to the van before you arrive.

Do you provide an awning?

We provide an easy to erect pop-up tent free of charge, which can sleep two or be used to keep your pitch. For an additional charge of £30 per booking we can hire you a drive away awning with inner tent – but as these are larger and take much longer to put up and down, we recommend the pop-up tent, especially if you are moving around a lot.

Do we need any other insurance?

The insurance provided relates to the vehicle and does not cover you for loss, damage or theft of your possessions – so we recommend, as with any holiday, that you take holiday or travel insurance to cover this. Holiday or travel insurance can also provide cover should you need to cancel your booking.

How is the stove fuelled?

The stove and heating are fuelled LPG bottle. This is included in the hire charge. We try to make sure there is enough gas for your trip but should you run out please replace the bottle at a petrol station, camping shop or Calor Gas centre and we will reimburse you the cost of a refill on your return.

Can we bring our dog?

We are happy for you to bring your dog on holiday. Please bring a blanket or towel to protect the upholstery and there is room on the floor for a dog bed. We require that your dog isn’t left unattended in the campervan at anytime. Finally we charge £15 for any extra valeting required at the end of the booking.

Are the campers non-smoking?

Yes. All of our campers are non-smoking.

Can you store our car?

We will store your car under cover and lock and key, at no extra cost, whilst you are using one of our vans, although your vehicle remains your responsibility.

How many seat belts do the vans have?

In addition to the two ‘three point’ seat belts in the front there are two further ‘three point’ seat belts on the back seat, with a middle lap belt too, so up to five people can be driven in one of the vans.

We ask you to provide your own child or booster seats for children and ensure these are safely fitted when you collect the van.

Do you offer a chauffeur driven service for weddings?

Sorry no, we are not offering a chauffeur driven wedding service at this time.
